Isn't technology just wonderful? Videoconferencing allows us to do things that just weren't possible a generation ago: online piano lessons! As a teenager growing up in a small rural Mississippi town (the same town Oprah Winfrey and blues legend Charlie Musselwhite are from), I was both playing in the local rock band and winning classical piano competitions. I'd buy albums by keyboard greats like Billy Preston, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Floyd Cramer, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Van Cliburn, and wish that they lived closer so that I could meet them and ask them for some musical tips.
Since studying with my piano and organ heroes wasn't possible (online piano lessons were still sci-fi), I taught myself how to pick out their keyboard parts with note-for-note perfection, and began playing professionally at age 14. At 18 an opportunity opened for me to study with one of the concert pianists I'd seen on a TV show, "The Voice of Firestone" - Eugene List, who taught at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. After improving my technique, ears, and repertoire at Eastman (with summers at Interlochen) and subsequently moving to Los Angeles, I began playing for, arranging for, and touring the world with, musicians that I'd grown up listening to in that small Mississippi town: the Beach Boys, Ricky Nelson, the Sweet Inspirations, Rod Stewart, and others...

For most of my career I've been a player/arranger/composer and did not teach, but a few years ago I began accepting a few talented students, all in the Los Angeles area near where I live: Mike Einziger of "Incubus", members of "Weezer", "Rooney", "Coconut Records", and others - some wanting to learn piano or organ, and others more interested in composition, arranging, and music theory, both rock and classical.
Now, thanks to Skype technology, if you want me to teach you, regardless of where you live or are traveling, we can arrange live online video-conference piano lessons.
The steps are easy:
1) e-mail me and tell me a little about yourself and your music. I'll reply and let you know whether I can help you.
2) we'll schedule a phone call, in which I'll ask you about your musical background, your current status, and where you want to go with your music in the future. There's no charge for the call.
3) we'll schedule a live online piano lesson via videoconferencing

And the good news is that technologically-speaking video conferencing is pretty easy to set up:
1) You'll download and install Skype onto a computer that is near, or can be placed near, your keyboard: piano, organ, synth, sampler, etc. It's completely free - the program itself and using it. By the way, if you prefer using something other than Skype, that's fine.
2) Then, if you don't already have them, you'll get a headset (for about $23) and a webcam (for about $80). Skype has links to the suggested models, making it easy to order them online.
3) Then, you and I will be able to videoconference - see each other and talk in real time. In the webcam piano lesson, with you at your keyboard, I'll be able to answer all your questions, correct your bad habits, teach you how to play your favorite pieces, and how to improvise and play by ear.
Whether you need just one
online piano lesson to answer a lot of your questions, or a series of ongoing,
structured online piano lessons,
write me and we'll
discuss what you need. If we both think that I can help you, then we can set up
a live online piano lesson via videoconference.
